Victim Services Unit

The Victim Services Unit provides post-conviction informational and support services to survivors and victims of crime. In accordance with the Victim Rights Law, we provide a 14-day advance notice, whenever a sentenced individual is transferred to a lower security setting. We will also notify in advance when a sentenced individual receives temporary, provisional, or final release from custody. In addition you will be notified in the event of an escape. Please know an individual must be registered for notification and the offender must be serving a sentence. Registration is done through the District Attorney's Office, the Massachusetts Parole Board, or through organizations the defendant is serving a sentence with.

The Victim Services Unit collaborates with other victim services in other counties, the Massachusetts Department of Correction, the Sex Offender Registry Board, the Massachusetts Parole Board, state and local police departments, and the Middlesex District Attorney's Office to make sure all survivors and victims of crime are receiving the information they are entitled to. We also interact with the community to improve victim services throughout the Commonwealth.

Services in addition to notification include:

  • Current status of incarcerated individuals
  • Victim safety awareness
  • Advice on securing protective orders
  • Crisis intervention
  • Phone counseling
  • Referrals to state and community resources/shelters
  • Referrals to local organizations for free victim safety cell phones
