Attorney Mail

In an effort to strengthen safety and security within the Middlesex Jail and House of Corrections (MJHOC) while ensuring attorneys’ accessibility, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) is implementing an Attorney Verification System (AVS) Protocol consistent with the Department of Corrections’ Standard Operating Procedure.

Effective January 2, 2025, all attorneys who wish to send privileged mail to an individual housed at the MJHOC, should so do using an Attorney Control Number (ACN).

Each attorney seeking an ACN, should send a completed ACN Request Form to the MSO, via email to MSOLegalMail@sdm.state.ma.us or via United States Postal Service (USPS) to 269 Treble Cove Rd, North Billerica, MA 01862.

The ACN Request Form must be completed in its entirety, including the attorney’s name, telephone number, email address, and Board of Bar Overseers number or out-of-state equivalent. Please note, that ACNs can only be issued to individual attorneys.

Once the ACN Request Form is received by the MSO, the attorney’s request for an ACN will be processed. If approved, an ACN will be provided along with a set of one hundred (100) AVS Barcoded labels. These custom AVS Barcode labels will be sent to the attorney via USPS to the address listed on the Board of Bar Overseers website. Please allow a minimum of 5-7 business days for the processing of your ACN Request Form from the date the request is received by the MSO.

After receipt of your AVS Barcode labels, you may send verified privileged mail to those housed in the MJHOC by affixing it to the outside of each envelope sent to the MJHOC.

If an MSO provided AVS Barcode label is lost or destroyed, or if an attorney requires additional labels, please notify the MSO through one of the means outlined above.

Please be advised, that correspondence sent to an individual housed at the MJHOC without an AVS Barcode following the effective date will still be considered privileged mail; however, such correspondence will be verified via phone call to the attorney.

Any questions regarding the ACN Request Form or the AVS, please do not hesitate to contact Assistant Deputy Superintendent Crystal Swinimer at cswinimer@sdm.state.ma.us or 978-932-3526.
