Middlesex Sheriff’s Office announces charges against inmate for attack on a correction officer

The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) has announced it has obtained a warrant charging inmate Patrick D. Litchfield, 32, with the unprovoked attack of a correction officer inside the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Litchfield is charged with assault & battery on a correctional employee; assault & battery with a dangerous weapon; assault & battery with a dangerous weapon, serious bodily injury; aggravated assault & battery; intimidating a witness; and resisting arrest.

As a result of the attack, the officer suffered serious injuries and was transported to an outside hospital for treatment.  He was released from the hospital and is currently recovering at home.

“This assault demonstrates how difficult and dangerous the job of a corrections officer can be. In a split moment, this officer went from speaking to an inmate to surviving a violent attack,” said Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “We have rallied around this officer to ensure he and his family have the support they need, now and in the weeks ahead.”

Following the assault, members of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Peer Support Team and licensed clinicians immediately responded to the facility.  Team members were on site throughout the weekend and will continue to support the injured officer and all members of the MSO.

In response to the attack, Litchfield was immediately transferred out of MSO custody to be held on his current sentence and pending charges. An arraignment date for Litchfield has not yet been set.
