  • Applications are selected in the order that they are submitted. The YPSA does not use a lottery system.

  • Yes. You can add your child to the waitlist for any location. If your bus stop location is not listed on the online application, it has reached the safety capacity. Please call 978-495-7410 to inquire about our waitlist.

  • Acceptance letters are sent out after the properly completed applications are reviewed. Any parent is welcome to check on the status of an application by calling the YPSA office at 978-495-7410.

  • Payment is not due with the application. After we process your application, parents and guardians will receive an acceptance letter. The letter will include camp information, a link to make payment, and supplemental forms.

  • The cost of YPSA is $100.00 which includes breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks, transportation, and a fun week of camp! YPSA does offer a limited number of scholarships for families that are experiencing financial challenges.   • Individuals seeking to post bail must arrive at the Visiting Center at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction between 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., but no later than 7 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

    All bails must be posted in cash only. 

    Individuals posting bail must present a valid government-issued photo identification (driver's license, passport, etc.).

    Those with questions about posting bail should call 978-667-1711. After 4 p.m. and on weekends, callers can press extension (0).

  • Detainees and inmates can use funds to purchase canteen items including toiletries, clothing and food.

    Funds may be deposited at the Lobby deposit center kiosk between 6 am to 10 pm. You can also place funds on an account by visiting the Access Corrections website or by calling 866-345-1884. For your convenience the Middlesex Sheriff's Office now accepts MasterCard and Visa.

  • Property pick-up and clothing exchanges are by appointment only Monday through Friday with 24-hours notice.  Property must be picked-up by a formerly incarcerated person or designee (indicated by name on either MSO Property Release Form or Notarized Letter).  To make an appointment, please call 978-932-3153.

  • The Family Support Services Unit works with correctional staff to respond to inquiries, requests, concerns, and/or complaints raised by family members of individuals in the custody of the MSO. The unit also engages families through outreach and education and provides information, assistance, referrals, and support to family members during the incarceration period.

    Additionally, members of the unit work to educate family members about rules and policies regarding visits, mail and telephone contact, and other routine information, as well as conduct proactive outreach to families when incarcerated individuals are identified by staff as being in distress or experiencing a crisis.

  • Incarcerated individuals can collect leftover funds by calling 978-667-1711 and contacting the Canteen Department at extensions 3162, 3270, 3239, or 3290. After providing an accurate address, Canteen will mail a check made out to the individual's name. Individuals cannot collect funds in person at the facility.

  • Individuals with information regarding the whereabouts of wanted fugitives may contact the Middlesex Sheriff's Office Warrant Apprehension Unit at 617-682-4890.

  • Residents who receive scam calls in which individuals identify themselves as Middlesex Sheriff's Office deputies or officers may contact the MSO at 978-667-1711 and ask to speak with the Inner Perimeter Security (IPS) Unit. Individuals are also encouraged to notify their local police department and the Federal Trade Commission, by clicking on this link: FTC Reporting Fraud.

    Individuals who receive scam calls in which perpetrators identify themselves as local or federal authorities are encouraged to notify those departments or agencies directly.

Community Affairs

  • The Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA) is a summer camp for youngsters ages 8-12 from across Middlesex County. Cadets visit with local police and fire officials, learn about fire safety hazards in our fire safety trailer and participate in exercises designed to demonstrate the power and importance of teamwork.

YPSA - Camp Information

  • The bus will pick up the cadets at the designated bus stop at 8 am and drop off the cadets at 2:45 pm. If parents are directly dropping off cadets at the camp in Chelmsford, the drop off is 8:30 am and pick up is 2:15 pm.

  • The specific activities for YPSA may vary from week-to-week, however each program is chosen for its educational benefit. Some regular programs at YPSA include fire safety training, demonstrations from law enforcement K-9s and special operations, classroom instruction on emergency preparedness, as well as arts and crafts and lots of fun games. If you have a question on a specific activity or program, you can contact the YPSA office at 978-495-7410.

  • Yes. Parents or guardians can send specific food for their children. You will be able to note that on the supplementary forms you fill out after acceptance.

  • The meals and snacks provided at YPSA have been reviewed by a nutritionist to provide a healthy balance of food for the age group that we serve. Water, milk, sports drinks and seltzer are also provided to keep cadets hydrated. Specific questions about the weekly menu can be directed to the YPSA office at 978-495-7410.

  • The Counselor in Training (CIT) program is an initiative to allow individuals age 13-16 to continue to participate in the Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA) and provide an opportunity for participants to develop basic leadership skills.  As a CIT, participants will take part in activities alongside cadets while also having the opportunity to meet with the YPSA director and others to discuss leadership.  All CITs are expected to be role models for younger cadets.  Those interested in having their child participate as a CIT, may add a note in the comment section of the registration form.

  • There will be multiple buses during each week of camp. All accepted families will receive an email prior to the camp with detailed information regarding pick-up and drop-off for each day of camp.

  • Yes. Any child in Middlesex County can attend any week the family wants as long as they can get to a bus stop or be able to drop off and pick up their cadet at the YPSA in Chelmsford.

  • Yes. In addition to the professional bus driver, the YPSA has two counselors on each bus. There is specific training during the week of staff orientation that reviews bus safety procedures. Parents and guardians will be working closely with the counselors to check in their child and pick up their child each day. The counselors also have a complete list of all information regarding who can pick up the children and any medical issues.

  • No. For safety reasons, a child must be picked up by a parent, guardian or other adult designated on the supplementary forms. A child cannot be picked up by an older sibling unless they are 18 years old or older.
