Wakefield Police complete scenario-based training in collaboration with Middlesex Sheriff’s Office

Members of the Wakefield Police Department (MPD) recently completed four days of scenario-based training in collaboration with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) Chief Steven A member of the Wakefield Police Department participates in interactive, scenario-based training on the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Mobile Training Center on Thursday, October 21, 2021.Skory and Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced today.

The training was conducted from October 19-22 utilizing the MSO’s Mobile Training Center (MTC).  Forty (40) officers participated in the training with a focus on de-escalation and officer safety techniques.

The MTC is a specialized trailer that provides officers the ability to train for situations they may encounter during their daily duties.

Over the course of the week, Wakefield police officers participated in scenarios that included various types of disturbances as well as incidents in which mental health was a key factor.  Officers also participated in an active shooter scenario.

“The interactive scenarios available on the Mobile Training Center require officers to use the full range of their training – particularly their communication and de-escalation skills – in a setting that allows instructors to give immediate feedback.  Most important, each department is able to work with our highly trained staff to select scenarios that match what that department most wants their officers to work on during each training period,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “We’re extremely proud to work with Chief Skory and our Wakefield Police partners on this important training.”

“This type of training is the closest thing to real-life scenario training that helps officers enhance their de-escalation skills as well as the many other tactics and communication used to keep everyone safe.  The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office has been a tremendous partner for many years and this was another opportunity for us to collaborate on these important areas of public safety,” said Chief Skory.  “I am grateful to Sheriff Peter Koutoujian for giving our police department this opportunity.”

In 2020, over 875 officers took part in training on the MTC.  To date this year, the MTC has already been used by a number of agencies including police departments in Arlington, Malden, Medford and Stoneham.

The MTC was purchased by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office with federal grant funds in 2010.
