Stoneham PD, Middlesex Sheriff’s Office partner on scenario-based training

Thirty (30) members of the Stoneham Police Department recently completed interactive, scenario-based training utilizing the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office’s (MSO) Mobile Training Center (MTC), Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian and Chief James T. McIntyre announced today.Stoneham Police Officer Emily Dello Russo participated in interactive, scenario-based training on the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Mobile Training Center (MTC) on April 8, 2021.

The training was conducted between April 5-9 in Stoneham.

The MTC is a specialized trailer that provides officers the ability to train for situations they may encounter during their daily duties.  Adaptive video scenarios displayed within the trailer require officers to use a host of skills – particularly communication and de-escalation – to resolve them.

“Thank you to the Middlesex County Sheriff's office for organizing this incredible training for our officers,” Chief McIntyre said.  “This opportunity provides officers the ability to learn how to handle and respond to real life scenarios in a controlled environment, and ultimately allows us to provide the best possible service for our community members.  I participated in the training myself and found it to be an excellent opportunity for officers to practice de-escalation skills.”

Over four days of training, members of the Stoneham Police Department participated in scenarios that focused on calls where mental health was a primaryStoneham Town Administrator Dennis Sheehan (left) and Chief James McIntyre visited with Stoneham police officers conducting interactive, scenario-based training on April 8, 2021. factor, workplace disturbances and patrol encounters.  Officers also participated in an active shooter scenario.

“The MTC is an invaluable training tool,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “The scenarios available on the MTC require officers to utilize all of their previous trainings and skills – especially their communication and de-escalation skills – while allowing departmental instructors the opportunity to provide instant feedback to each officer.  We are proud to once again work with Chief McIntyre and our Stoneham Police Department partners to make this training available.”

In 2020, more than 875 officers took part in training on the MTC.   To date this year, the MTC has already been used by a number of agencies including police departments in Acton, Bedford, Concord, Hopkinton and Tyngsborough.

The MTC was purchased by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office with federal grant funds in 2010.
