Sheriff warns of new telephone scam

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J Koutoujian is warning residents to be on the lookout for a new scam falsely claiming to involve an inmate needing money.

Recently an individual reported receiving a call indicating an inmate was trying to reach him to have money placed in an account for telephone access.  The reporting party, who was immediately suspicious of the call, told officers he was not aware of anyone he knew being held at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction.

“It’s critically important for the public to remain vigilant as these scammers continue to evolve in their tactics,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “Fortunately in this case the recipient of the call recognized this was likely a scam and immediately contacted our office to confirm his suspicion.”

If you, or someone you know, receive a similar call we encourage you to immediately contact the facility at which the individual is purportedly being incarcerated to confirm its authenticity before making any payments.
