MSO Personnel Complete FBI Basic Crisis Negotiation Course

This fall, nine members of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office completed a weeklong crisis negotiation program offered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The intensive 40-hour Basic Crisis Negotiation Course was co-hosted by the Dover (NH) Police Department and the Stratford County Sheriff’s Office, and included a combination of classroom instruction, case studies and role-play exercises.

“I want to congratulate these officers on completing this training,” said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian.  “Communication is one of the most effective tools we have at our disposal in corrections.  Not only will the enhanced communication skills learned by these officers benefit the MSO during crisis situations, but during our everyday activities as well.” 

The nine officers were selected to participate following an application and interview process.  Six of those completing the training are line officers, while two are assigned to human services positions and one works at the Lowell Community Counseling Center.

The negotiators will continue to train in-house, as well as with colleagues from the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC).
