MSO to participate in Natick gun buyback initiative

Citizens for a Safer Natick and the Natick Area Interfaith Clergy Association are partnering with the Natick Police Department and the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office to host a gun buyback initiative on Saturday, September 12 at the Hartford Street Presbyterian Church.  The event will run from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The initiative is funded through the generosity of the Metrowest Health Foundation.  This year’s buyback follows a similar event held in June 2017 in which more than 100 unwanted guns were turned in for destruction.

Individuals turning in unwanted guns are asked to transport them to the site unloaded and in their trunks.  Residents are eligible to receive coupons and/or gift cards based on the type of gun(s) turned in.

“This event has been successful in allowing individuals to discard unwanted firearms in a simple non judgement way. It is a tremendous public safety event that could prevent unwanted guns from ending up in the hands of someone that may wish to do harm to themselves or others,” said Chief James Hicks. “We are happy to once again partner with Citizens for a Safer Natick and the Natick Area Interfaith Clergy Association on our second event and thank Metrowest Health Foundation for also partnering with us to make Natick safer.

“Providing residents the opportunity to safely and securely dispose of unwanted firearms reduces the chance of accidental discharge, self-harm and theft – making both our homes and our communities safer,” said Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian.  “We’re proud to once again partner with Chief Hicks and all the stakeholders in Natick to make this initiative possible.”

Individuals with questions regarding buyback may contact Natick Police Chiefs Office at 508-647-9500.
