Middlesex Sheriff’s Office cleans graffiti at Waltham Housing Authority properties

MSO Graffiti Removal VehicleInmates from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) Community Work Program (CWP) were in Waltham on June 14-15, removing graffiti from Waltham Housing Authority properties on Hansen Road. The team of inmates, supervised by a MSO correction officer, cleaned several exterior walls using a paint-based removal system designed for use in residential areas.

“The Community Work Program is a win-win for both our communities and our inmates,” said Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “A city like my hometown of Waltham is able to complete a project it would not be able to otherwise, while the individuals who perform this service have the opportunity to give something back to the community as they prepare for reentry.”

CWP completes projects requested by municipalities, school districts, housing authorities and other similar entities. The crews are comprised of inmates nearing the end of their sentences who have completed individualized treatment plans – such as programming for substance use disorders, educational/vocational training and other needs – and have been screened and approved for participation by MSO staff.

Graffiti Removal CrewAccording to the Waltham Housing Authority Executive Director John Gollinger, "This program is a godsend to government agencies such as ours when resources are limited. e thank the Sheriff and the officer and inmates involved for their efforts in providing our housing community with a cleaner and mroe attractice environment."

The Sheriff’s CWP is provided at minimal costs to communities throughout Middlesex County.  So far this year crews have completed work in 25 Middlesex County communities, including Weston, Belmont and Arlington.
