Inmates from Middlesex Sheriff's Office help renovate Arlington Housing Authority properties

ARLINGTON, Mass – A team of inmates from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Community Work Program spent the first week of February renovating the floors and windows of several Arlington Housing Authority buildings, even shoveling sidewalks when recent snowstorms passed through.

“These acts of service allow our inmates to give back to their community while learning valuable work skills prior to their release,” said Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. “Getting into the routine of working every day will better prepare these men to reenter society, and in the meantime we provide a much needed service to the Arlington Housing Authority.”

CWP crews are comprised of carefully screened and supervised teams of three to five inmates.  They conduct painting, cleanup and other projects under the direct and constant supervision of a correction officer.

“The Middlesex Sheriff's CWP program has been an invaluable service to the Arlington Housing Authority and to our residents by completing work to our properties that we did not have the funds to accomplish without their efforts,” said Executive Director John Griffin. “It’s an exceptionally well run program by Sheriff Koutoujian.”

The CWP program has visited sixteen communities in Middlesex County already this year.
