Eighty-eight (88) members of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department recently completed interactive, scenario-based training utilizing the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Mobile Training Center (MTC), Essex Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger and Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced today.

The MTC is a specialized trailer that allows officers to train for responses to incidents that they may encounter during their duties.  Middlesex Sheriff’s Office deputies who operate the MTC can provide unique scenarios for each user to test their communications, de-escalation and firearms skills.

“We’re proud to once again partner with Sheriff Coppinger and our colleagues in Essex County to provide this critical training,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “This collaboration is emblematic of the cooperation that exists across county lines here in the Commonwealth.”An Essex County Sheriff's Department Deputy goes through scenario-based training in the Middlesex Sheriff's Office Mobile Training Center (MTC).

“This specialized training unit helps our officers sharpen their skills in response to high-stress situations,” Sheriff Coppinger said. “We appreciate the partnership we have with the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office and thank them for bringing this training unit to our officers.”

The training was carried out on the grounds of the Middleton House of Correction over a period of 10 days with scenarios focused on situations officers may encounter, especially while assigned duties outside the walls of the jail.  It was the second consecutive year the offices partnered on the training.

The MTC was purchased by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office with federal grant funds in 2010 and has been utilized by numerous local municipal and university police departments.  In 2019, two dozen agencies including police departments in Acton, Lawrence, Malden and Medford utilized the MTC.
