28 Inmates graduate from educational, vocational programs at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction

More than two-dozen inmates currently incarcerated in the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction marked their successful completion of educational and vocational programs during a ceremony April 7.

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian presided over the ceremony, which was attended by correctional staff, as well as invited guests of the graduates.  In total, five inmates earned their high school equivalency, seven graduated from the Culinary Arts program and another 16 men (two classes) graduated from the Custodial Training program.

“These programs provide participants an opportunity to gain valuable and marketable job skills,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “Time and again, successful completion of educational and vocational programs has had a demonstrated effect on reducing recidivism.  These programs, coupled with substance abuse treatment and other programming, provide a cornerstone on which to grow and built future successes.”

Graduates of the 12-week culinary arts program earn a certificate of participation from Shawsheen Regional Technical High School and credits towards a degree at Middlesex Community College. In addition, they earn a SERVSAFE sanitation certificate.

Inmates who participate in the nine-week custodial program learn about the newest techniques and tools in the green janitorial industry and graduate with multiple private certifications they can then use to apply for jobs following their release.
