Shirley Police Chief Samuel Santiago and Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian have announced the recent completion of interactive, scenario-based training for members of the town’s police department.
The training was held July 8-12 in Shirley and facilitated by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (MSO) utilizing the MSO’s Mobile Training Center.
During the training, officers were put through a series of video-based scenarios that replicated situations they may need to respond to on any shift. This included traffic stops and incidents in which individuals were in mental health crisis. These scenarios allowed officers to focus on the effective use of communication and de-escalation skills, with Shirley PD training staff able to provide immediate feedback.
In addition, officers also participated in an active-shooter scenario.
“It is always great to have a training resource like the Middlesex Sheriff’s MTC at our disposal which provides our officer with real world and scenario based trained that will enhance their training and ability to respond to incidents, but will also enhance their critical thinking skills,” said Chief Santiago.
“The MTC is a unique and valuable asset, in large part, because officers who go through it are required to utilize the full range of their training and experience, just as is needed on the street,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “We are proud to work with Chief Santiago and his team to facilitate this important training.”
