The 34th Basic Training Academy

Week 2:

The recruits again rose with the sun in Week two, engaging in physical training each morning before setting off to the Training Academy.

Monday and Tuesday the recruits hit the books.  Their classroom sessions revolved around conduct and discipline, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office’s mission statement, and officer wellness.  Policy procedures, count procedures and post orders were also addressed.

Wednesday and Thursday Deputy Dave Ellison returned for a second day of Drill and Ceremony.  To his surprise, the recruits were better prepared for this second go-around.

After Week One’s Friday visit to the Billerica House of Correction, the recruits were eager to further delve into the world of corrections.  But they had to earn that opportunity at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge.  After running up 17 flights of stairs, the recruits were ready to witness the day-to-day happenings of a pre-trial facility.  Superintendent Scott Brazis and Deputy Superintendent Desiree Lashley welcomed them.  Recruits spent the day touring the Jail and meeting the Sheriff’s Office personnel.  The class also got the chance to tour the Community Counseling Center located on the fifth floor. Sergeant Philip Hamilton explained all areas of the center, including laboratory processes.
