The 34th Basic Training Academy

Week 18:

In week 18, Captain Robert Pacheco came by the training academy and gave an overview of the Cambridge Jail.  On Monday, escape procedures were reviewed, as well as incident command systems and NIMS taught by Mr. Joe Blair and Sergeant Frank Eldridge from Newton Police Department.

Officer Daniel Crowley taught first responder.  There were various demonstrations about what to do in emergency situations.  He walked the recruits through the proper measures for stabilizing a person if they are in an accident or hurt.  In the afternoon the recruits split into groups where they had to reenact the emergency routines they learned from Officer Crowley.

Deputy Michael Hayden taught anger management on Thursday.  In part of this class, the recruits watched an informative video.  Also this week, there was more focus on move team procedures shown through different scenarios.

Ms. Crystell Anthony from Boston University returned to teach one squad about understanding and managing conflict.  Communication presentations finished up for others on topics of his or her own choice.  Areas focused on ranged from pros and cons of capital punishment to community policing.  With many of the presentations, the recruits related their topic and compared it to the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office.  For example, with community policing, one recruit related the topic to the Sheriff’s Office and what Sheriff DiPaola has done for the community.
