MSO IN THE NEWS...

On Monday May 4, 2009, Middlesex Sheriffs Office employees gathered together in celebration of National Correctional Officers Week and to recognize the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office 2009 Corrections Officers and Administrators of the year.  The day’s events also included the 2009 Employee Recognition Ceremony honoring those employees that have gone above and beyond their call of duty.

Sheriff James V. DiPaola opened the ceremony, saying, “Today is an opportunity to share the many accomplishments we saw over the past year and recognize those officers who have served the citizens of Middlesex County with distinction”

While the ceremony included officers being recognized for their years of service and good conduct, the focus was on those officers and administrators that went above and beyond in their roles inside the institutions and outside in the communities that they represent.  Family, friends and honored guests, such as Massachusetts State Representative Katherine Clark (32nd Middlesex District), paid homage to the award recipients.  Each year a committee selects a corrections officer and an administrator from each facility to be recognized for their service to the Middlesex Sheriff's Office.  The committee receives the nominations from from any employee who chooses to recognize a fellow officer.

Deputy Kevin Lopes received the medal of valor for two distinct incidents.  Deputy Lopes and Deputy Charles Hickey were evacuating a tenant  who had 4 dogs.   During the move one of the dogs leapt  and attacked another dog that Deputy Hickey was holding.  It took a few attempts of unlocking the pit bull’s jaws from the dog.  With the help of a neighbor, the pit bull was put into a cage, away from the other animal.  Deputy Lopes was bitten twice.  The second instance occurred September 3, 2008.  Deputy Kevin Lopes was assisting a citizen with directions at the Simioni Memorial Arena in Cambridge when he observed two males arguing and walking rapidly towards the arena.  One of the men called out for Deputy Lopes’ assistance.  This individual was the Loss Prevention Manager at Shaw’s Supermarket inside the Twin City Plaza in Somerville.  He stated that the male he was arguing with stole a large quantity of meat.  Deputy Lopes then tried to stop the man who took off running.  Deputy Lopes chased the man and observed him pull out a knife, which the man then tossed onto a grassy area near the entrance of the arena.  Deputy Lopes caught the man and after a brief struggle, handcuffed and searched him.  Congratulations Deputy Lopes for your outstanding performance.
