Week 11:

In week 11, Deputy Dave Ellison returned for another round of drill & ceremony with Bravo Squad.  This time around the recruits were ready and made big improvements from the first week’s fumbles.

On Tuesday, the recruits attended the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office’s Employee Recognition Ceremony at Melrose Memorial Hall.  One of the recruits, Recruit Patrick MacDonald, received an outstanding service award for his quick action and vigilance when he was on-duty as a temporary officer and subdued some questionable behavior by a visitor.  Without his efforts, it may have escalated into a serious and dangerous situation.   He was the first recruit ever to receive this award.

More presentations were given in the communication skills class. Recruit Michael Souza taught the class about sign language, while others taught sports moves, games and instruments.  In particular, Recruit Stephen Gardner and Recruit Sean Mullin both thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Greeley’s class the past couple of weeks.

“It was a great opportunity to learn about the other recruits through their talents,” commented Recruit Mullin.

Middlesex Sheriffs Office HIV Coordinator Patricia Todd came by and talked to the recruits about communicable disease.  They learned what to be aware of and some situations that can arise in prison.  Deputy Patrick Donoghue, Captain Steven Batchelder and Lieutenant James Minnelli all taught the recruits about proper release.

Captain Linda Sweeney and Deputy Lela Hall lectured on domestic violence policy and statistics.  Lieutenant James Pierce from Winchester Police Department came in to talk about police response to domestic violence calls.  Victim notification was instructed by Captain Sweeney and Victim Advocate Kerry Sullivan.  Captain Sweeney, Assessment Specialist Kerryn Armstrong and Case Manager Corey Decker discussed victim based classes available for inmates.

Constitutional law was continued until Friday.  Also on Friday, Deputy Scot Chaput taught disorder management to Alpha Squad.  They learned how to handle different levels of riots that may occur in prison.  Captain Gene Massa and Captain Jean Martin both instructed physical training this week.

“I was eager to get back to physical training after recovering from an injury the past few weeks,” said Recruit Ronald Gill.
