Sheriff Koutoujian to speak at White House event on criminal justice

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian will be at the White House today – Monday, July 18 – at 1:30 p.m. to participate in the White House Forum on Disability and Criminal Justice.

Sheriff Koutoujian will join officials from the Center for American Progress, the American Civil Liberties Union and the White House on the first of two panels.

The Sheriff will specifically address the issue of mental health and incarceration.  At the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction, one-third of all individuals in custody are being monitored by mental health staff on a daily basis.

Monday’s event at the White House will be the second in just over a month at which Sheriff Koutoujian will participate.  In June, the Sheriff discussed the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office Medication Assisted Treatment and Directed Opioid Recovery (MATADOR) Program at a meeting hosted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.  MATADOR is designed to assist those battling opioid addiction.
