Middlesex Sheriff’s Office & Lowell Humane Society Partner To Provide Bedding for Needy Pets

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J Koutoujian met Thursday with staff of the Lowell Humane Society to tour the facility and discuss recent donations made by the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office to the local animal shelter.  In just the past month, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office has donated over 100 articles of used clothing or linens that have been repurposed as bedding for needy animals.

“Even though we can no longer use these items, they can still benefit a dog or cat in the Humane Society’s care,” Sheriff Koutoujian stated. “We started out hoping to recycle some of these items; when we found out we could recycle them and help out a worthy cause, we jumped right in.”

"We're so pleased that the Middlesex Sheriff's Office selected us to partner on this recycling effort,” said Jill O’Connell, Executive Director of the Lowell Humane Society. “The donated items will be put to good use with the more than 1,100 animals we care for each year."

The donations to the Lowell Humane Society are part of increased environmental efforts within the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction. This past March, new recycling buckets were purchased using a Department of Environmental Protection grant and since then the facility has produced 45 fewer tons of trash, while almost doubling its recycling tonnage.
