WELCOME MESSAGE FROM MIDDLESEX SHERIFF
PETER J. KOUTOUJIAN
The role of sheriff is rooted in public safety. Twenty-four hours a day, the men and women of the Middlesex Sheriff's Office make this their mission.
We are responsible for providing effective and proactive public safety. We do this by ensuring that those in our custody serve their time to the fullest extent in the most secure, productive and safe environment possible.
We also take our public safety responsibility to the next level by utilizing the opportunity to prepare those incarcerated for success upon release. As a former prosecutor, I have found that the best way to protect the public from criminal activity is to stop the criminal from re-offending. If we give inmates the chance to develop a skill or increase their education level, they will have previously non-existent tools to help them get a job, pay their debts, earn a living and cultivate the self-esteem and pride to be productive citizens. We look intensely at each individual background in order to establish and focus on the risk factors that led to their initial incarceration. Mental health issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, education level, work status and more all play an important role in determining how we can correct bad behavior. Inmates are held accountable for their actions and given every opportunity to turn the negative experience of incarceration into the positive result of starting a new life.
We look forward to working with you to bring public safety in the Commonwealth to new heights.
